Plant Care 101: How to Keep Your Plants Happy and Healthy
Share
Caring for plants may seem simple, but each type of plant has unique needs to stay healthy and vibrant. In this article, we’ll give you the basics of plant care to ensure your plants thrive, whether you’re a green thumb or a beginner.
1. Water: the golden mean
Too much or too little water is often the reason that plants do not survive. The trick is to know how much water your specific plant needs. For most houseplants, you should only water them when the top layer of the potting soil feels dry. Succulents and cacti can go for a long time without water, while tropical plants such as ferns need more regular watering. Tip: use a watering can with a long spout to water directly at the roots, without wetting the leaves.
2. Light: Finding the perfect spot
Light is crucial for plant growth. The amount and type of light your plant needs depends on the species. Place sun-loving plants such as cacti and ficus near a window with lots of direct sunlight. Shade plants such as sansevieria and philodendron thrive in rooms with indirect light. Be careful: too much sunlight can burn leaves, while too little light can slow growth.
3. Nutrition: give your plant something extra
Plants get their nutrients from the soil, but sometimes they need an extra boost. Use plant food during the growing season (spring and summer) to support them. Liquid fertilizer is the most convenient for houseplants, because you can easily add it when watering. Make sure you feed according to the instructions, because over-fertilizing can be harmful to your plants.
4. Humidity: Keeping Tropical Plants Happy
Many houseplants, especially tropical species, like high humidity. In winter, when the heating is on, the humidity in the house can become very low. This can cause the leaves to dry out. Use a plant sprayer to regularly spray the leaves of your tropical plants or place a humidifier in the room.
5. Pruning and maintenance: keep your plant fresh
By regularly removing dead or yellowed leaves, you help your plant to focus energy on new growth. For some plants, such as the Pilea or Ficus, it is also good to prune to keep the plant in shape. Repot your plant every one to two years, so that the roots have more room to grow. Use fresh potting soil and a slightly larger pot.
6. Watch out for pests: prevent vermin
Pests such as spider mites, aphids and thrips can sometimes attack your plants. Check the leaves regularly for discolouration, spots or webs. If you discover a pest, use an organic pesticide or wipe the leaves with a mixture of water and a drop of dish soap.
