
Background and history of Opuntia microdasys – Disc Cactus or Rabbit Ear Cactus

The Opuntia microdasys is a member of the Cactaceae family and is native to the desert regions of Mexico. The name Opuntia comes from the city of Opus in Greece, where similar plants were said to grow according to ancient writings. The species name microdasys means “small hairs”, which refers to the fine, spiny glochids that cover the cactus.
In its natural habitat, Opuntia microdasys grows in dry, sandy soil, often in full sun. It can reach a height of around 40 to 60 centimetres, depending on conditions, and sometimes produces beautiful yellow flowers in the summer. In ideal conditions, these flowers can develop into edible fruits, known as “prickly pears”.
The cactus is often associated with protection and perseverance, symbolism that comes from its ability to survive in extreme conditions. It is also valued as a decorative plant for its unique appearance and versatility.
