Care and maintenance of the Viburnum tinus (Snowball)
Share
The Viburnum tinus, better known as Snowball, is a popular evergreen shrub that adds colour and texture to the garden all year round. With its dark green leaves and fragrant, creamy white to pale pink flowers in winter and early spring, it is a favourite for both modern and classic gardens. But how do you keep this versatile plant healthy and flowering?
The Viburnum tinus likes a position in full sun or partial shade. Although it can thrive in various soil types, it has a slight preference for well-drained, humus-rich soil. It is important to ensure that the plant is not in soil that is too wet, as this can cause root rot. In dry periods, extra watering is necessary, especially for young plants.
Pruning the Viburnum tinus is easy. After flowering, usually in early spring, you can remove dead or damaged branches and prune the shrub into shape. If you want to keep the shrub more compact, you can prune it back a little further. Because the plant grows slowly, you don't have to worry about too much pruning.
A great advantage of the Viburnum tinus is that it is very resistant to cold and wind. However, in severe winters it can suffer some damage to the leaves. It is advisable to plant it in a sheltered spot, for example close to a wall or hedge, to protect it from the worst cold. A layer of mulch around the base of the plant in winter also helps to keep the roots warm.
